Satellites may indeed provide wide coverage area without the need for deploying complex infrastructures, thus representing a viable choice for scenarios ranging from rural areas to highspeed trains, to emergency/crisis areas. New satellite system architectures are being envisaged to be fully IP based and support digital video broadcasting and return channel protocols, e.g. DVB-S, DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS [1].
