Response to Bongiovanni and Hyman The Use of Corporal Punishment 291 Of prime importance is the potential of corporal punishment to produce socially disruptive behavior. In that punishment is primarily based upon the concept of avoidance learning, the student thus punished in school will tend to avoid the school situation. Such avoidance behavior may be manifest in tardiness, truancy, dropping out of school, and distant student-teacher relationships. The potential for counteraggressi
