ISO 639是用来区分所有已知的语言规范的术语。每种语言都分配两个字母(639-1)或三个英文字母(639-2和639-3),小写字母的缩写,修订后的版本命名的。该系统是非常有用的语言学家和人类学家来分类说了区域基础上的语言,计算分析领域lexicostatistics。ISO 639有五个代码列表。

- ISO639-1:双字母代码,一是每个语言或ISO 639宏语言
而一些:
- ISO 639-2 / T:三字母代码,对于相同的语言为639-1
- ISO 639-2 / B:三字母代码,大多相同639-2 / T,但与来自英国名称而不是语言天然名字衍生一些码(下表中,这些不同的码在突出粗体)
- ISO639-3:三字母代码,相同639-2 / T为语言,但与每个品种的ISO 639宏语言的不同码
