Physical storage devices include local SCSI disks, and networked like Fibre Channel (FC) SAN disk arrays, Internet SCSI (iSCSI) SAN disk arrays, and NAS arrays. Local SCSI disks stores virtual machine files on internal or external storage devices or arrays attached to the ESX host through a direct connection. Networked storage stores virtual machine files on external shared storage devices or arrays located outside of the ESX host. The ESX host communicates with the networked devices through a high‐speed network. You need to format Fibre Channel SANs and iSCSI SANs to VMFS file type for the ESX host to access them. Format NAS arrays to NFS file type for the ESX host to access them. You can also use raw LUNs through raw data mapping (RDM) mapped through a VMFS volume.
