You had a mainframe. Then came distributed systems. Then virtualization. And, if you wanted, you could outsource your environment. All of this was enabling you to deliver a business service to your business, or to your customers, depending on your role. Now things are a bit more complicated. You have IaaS, SaaS, PaaS – and IT is extending the beyond the walls of the enterprise In this new world, CA is doing 4 things in the cloud. First, CA is cloud enabling existing applications to extend your environment into the cloud if you choose. Examples include: Identity and Access Management Solutions – extending the umbrella of the enterprise identity to cover cloud services. SpecAM – provisions an Amazon EC2 instance in the cloud, as well as in your data center Second, CA is offering SaaS versions of our products Clarity on Demand Nimsoft on Demand Others will be forthcoming These two approaches though, they are not transformational. They are simply table stakes for a software vendor these days. The next two things we are doing are transformation. Lets look at Service Level Management. This is how you manage outsourced IT. The problem is, with all of the options out there, SLM is no longer enough on its own. You need the tools to discover, measure and compare business services that are part of your extended IT supply chain. This is the third thing we are doing – decision support for the IT supply chain. But that isn’t all, because if you want to compare internal and external services, you need a standard way to measure the service – from a holistic perspective. And this is why we started the Service Measurement Index consortium with Carnegie Mellon University. The SMI is a consortium chartered with creating a holistic set of measurements for services, and includes Quality, Agility, Risk, Cost, Capability and Security. We also started cloud commons, as a central location for practitioners, industry experts and users to share information about the cloud and their experiences. Fourth and finally, we have invested in cloud solutions. Typically there are two approaches to creating clouds – whether private or public. The approaches are the traditional and the transformational approach. The traditional approach involves automation solutions, working in a heterogeneous environment to evolve through the plateaus of virtualization efficiency to achieve the benefits of the cloud. This is achieved with Spectrum automation manager. The transformational approach takes a green field view of the cloud, creating a new cloud computing infrastructure from x86 servers. This approach is achieved with 3Tera AppLogic.
