BI So what changes with this new S+S model? The key here is that we continue to see the need for a well featured, well managed application platform. The introduction of new service consumption types can offer many benefits, but standalone “SaaS” offerings that don’t integrate in with existing infrastructure and systems quickly becomes unwieldy and typically does not in results for the business. So the key here is that your internal application platform needs to have core service enablers built in – you could think of this like an Enterprise Service Bus – we don’t specifically call our platform that term but it’s a similar discussion around core capabilities that your technology has to expose, compose and consume web services. A funny thing about the new SaaS models is that it often sounds like you can just out and consume new apps and fix all your problems. But as all of us know in this room – the reality is that every large business has existing systems with data, logic and process built in that can’t just be replaced or retired. So it very quickly becomes a platform discussion around integration and core capabilities vs. just ripping and replacing with the latest consumption model. So how does Microsoft see this new world of S+S in terms of customer consumption models. We see three major types of service consumption areas: Building Blocks – The raw building block capabilities to enable developers to build interesting services (or composite apps) e.g. BizTalk Services or Amazon S3 and SQS Attached – Services that add value on top of typically on-premise software e.g. Exchange Hosted Services (security, anti-spam, archiving), Windows Live Update Finished – Services built for delivery over the internet that would be consumed end to end. e.g. Dynamics CRM Live, Salesforce.com Let’s take a look at examples of each of these areas…. * © 2006 Microsoft Corporation.
