The primordial objective of these lectures is to prepare the reader to deal with a wide variety of applications that include optimal allocation of (limited) resources, finding best estimates or best-fits, etc. Optimization problems of this type arise in almost all areas of human industry: engineering, economics, agriculture, logistics, ecology, finance, information and communication technology, and so on. Because the solution may have to respond to an evolutionary system, in time and/or space, or must take into account uncertainty about some of the problem’s data, we usually end up with having to solve a large scale optimization problems and this, to a large extent, conditions our overall approach. Consequently, the layout of the material doesn’t follow the pattern of more traditional introduction to optimization textbooks.
