Camera Calibration
The original two plane camera calibration model [l] is based on interpolation concept, and “since the formulas for the transformation between image and object coordinates is empirically based, it is not clear what kind of approximation is assumed” (Tsb [2]). In this’paper we investigate the two plane camera calibration model systematically in terms of perspective mapping and present a unified new model, which correctly answers the question in the above quotation. By considering the effect of camera lense distortion on the perspective mappings between image plane and each world reference plane separately, the process of computing line of sight from image point can be made linear in the presence of any kind of lense distortions. We show that both the original two plane model and the popular pin hole model can be realized as special cases of this model. Experimental results indicate that the proposed model achieves better accuracy in the mapping from image plane to world plane.
