Overview of Extensions to the Media Transfer Protocol Specification This is preliminary documentation and subject to change. This documentation presents an overview of extensions to the Microsoft Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) specification. MTP incorporates a mechanism to enable Microsoft and other vendors to extend the core commands, events, properties, and object formats that are defined in the MTP specification. An MTP extension is a set of additional commands, events, properties, and formats that adds a particular capability or group of related capabilities to an MTP-compatible portable device. For example, MTP extensions are available for digital rights management and wireless networking. A particular MTP device can support some, none, or all of the available MTP extensions. This documentation summarizes all of the extensions to MTP that Microsoft has currently defined. This summary should be helpful to hardware vendors who require general information about the available MTP extensions to determine which extensions might be of interest to them for possible use in their MTP-compatible portable devices. However, to ensure correct implementation of these extensions, hardware vendors should refer directly to the documents that are listed in References.
