ip generation wireless networks
WirelessnetworksareevolvingintowirelessIP(InternetProtocol)networksto overcomethelimitationsoftraditionalcircuit-switchedwirelessnetworks.Wireless IPnetworksaremoresuitableforsupportingtherapidlygrowingmobiledataand multimediaapplications.IPtechnologiesbringthegloballysuccessfulInternet servicecreationandofferingparadigmtowirelessnetworks,bringingthevastarray ofInternetservicestomobileusersandprovidingasuccessfulplatformforfostering futuremobileservices.IP-basedprotocols,whichareindependentoftheunderlying radiotechnologies,arealsobettersuitedforsupportingseamlessservicesover heterogeneousradiotechnologiesandforachievingglobalroaming. Wirelessnetworksareevolvingontwomajorfronts.First,radioaccesssystems areevolvingtothirdandfourthgenerationsystemsthatcansupportsignificantly highersystemcapacityandper-userdatarateswithenhancedquality-of-service (QoS)supportcapabilities.Second,wirelessIPnetworkingtechnologiesare profoundlychangingtheoverallwirelessnetworkarchitecturesandprotocols. Manybooksareavailableonradioaccesssystems,examiningthephysical,link, andnetworklayersspecifictoeachradiosystem.Fewbooks,however,havebeen designedtosystemicallyaddressthewirelessIPnetworkingaspect,i.e.,archi- tectures,protocols,andtechniquesattheIPlayerandaboveofawirelessIP network.Thisbookseekstoprovideasystematicdescriptionandcomparisonof next-generationwirelessIPnetworkarchitectures,systems,andprotocols,witha focusontheIPlayerandabove. SeveralmajoreffortshaveemergedtodefineglobalstandardsforwirelessIP networks.Thetwomostinfluentialstandardsbodiesare3GPP(ThirdGeneration PartnershipProject)and3GPP2(ThirdGenerationPartnershipProject2).Different standardseffortshavebeentakingsignificantlydifferentapproaches,whichleadto differentarchitecturesanddifferentmigrationpathstowardfuturewirelessIP xi networks.ThisbookprovidesinsightsintocriticalissuesinwirelessIPnetworking, thoroughlyillustratesthestandardsandnetworkarchitecturesdefinedbyleading standardsbodiessuchas3GPPand3GPP2,anddiscussesindetailprotocols andtechniquesinfourmajortechnicalareas:signaling,mobility,security,and QoS. Toprovidethenecessarybackground,thebookstartsbypresentingahistorical overviewoftheevolutionofwirelessnetworksinChapter1,Introduction.Chapter1 thenreviewstheevolutionofpublicmobileservicesbyexaminingthefirst,second, andcurrentwavesofmobiledataservices.Itcontinuesontodiscussthemotivations forIP-basedwirelessnetworksandprovidesanoverviewofrelatedstandards activities. Chapter2detailsthenetworkarchitecturesdefinedby3GPPand3GPP2.Tohelp readersquicklygetasenseofthesolutionsproposedby3GPPand3GPP2andto easilyidentifytheirfundamentaldifferences,Chapter2presentsthemostimportant aspectsofthearchitecturesproposedby3GPPand3GPP2inaconsistentformatand highlightstheirmajordifferences.Inaddition,theall-IPmobilenetworkarchitecture proposedbytheMobileWirelessInternetForum(MWIF)isalsodiscussed. Chapters3to6addresssystematicallyfourofthemostcriticaltopicareasinnext- generationwirelessnetworks:signaling,mobilitymanagement,security,andQoS. BecauseChapter2discussesnetwork-layersignalingandcontrolnecessaryforthe operationsofthenetworks,Chapter3focusesonapplication-levelsignalingand sessioncontrolneededtosupportreal-timeandmultimediaapplicationsinIP networksandintheIPMultimediaSubsystems(IMS)definedby3GPPand3GPP2. Chapters4,5,and6discussissuesandsolutionsrelatedtomobilitymanagement, networksecurity,andQoS,respectively.EachchapterlooksfirstatthesubjectinIP networks,thenatthearchitecturesandprotocolsdefinedby3GPPand3GPP2.The MWIFspecificationsarediscussedinsomechaptersifrelatedissuesinMWIFare alsoaddressed. Thebookisdesignedprimarilyforresearchers,engineers,technicalmanagers, andgraduateandundergraduatestudents.PeopleenteringthefieldofwirelessIP networkingwillalsofindthisbookahelpfulreference.Thebookemphasizesthe principlesunderlyingeachmajorarchitectureandillustratestheseprincipleswith abundanttechnicaldetails.Itprovidestheaudiencewithperspectivesthatare difficulttoobtainfromreadingthestandardsspecificationsdirectly.
