Fortran 2003 Handbook
For a programming language, Fortran has been around a long time. It was one of the first widely used “high-level” languages, as well as the first programming language to be standardized. Although Fortran has been enhanced many times, the enhancements almost always have been upward compatible; old programs continue to work with new compilers. It is still the premier language for scientific and engineering computing applications. The purpose of this handbook is to describe the latest version of this language, Fortran 2003. This chapter sets the stage by providing relevant background and describing the notation used to specify the syntax of Fortran 2003.
