This book aims to provide the student with some basic modelling skills that will have application to a wide variety of problems. The focus is on those mathematical techniques that are applicable to models involving differential equations, and which describe rates of change. We consider models in three different areas: growth and decay processes, interacting populations and heating/cooling problems. The main mathematical technique used is that of solving differential equations. However, the range of applications and mathematical techniques presented should provide a broad appreciation of the scope of this type of modelling, while the skills developed are transferable to many other areas.
