probablistic
The motivation to write this book came a few years back when a colleague from one of the engineering departments (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) approached us with a problem that required modeling a real life data set which looked highly positively skewed. There are many good statistics books available on areas like survival analysis, reliability, and life testing, where one often encounters positively skewed data sets. There are a few recent books that devote entirely on one or a few specific positively skewed probability distributions. These books, which are quite thorough and rigorous, tend to be highly mathematical, and as a result may discourage many applied scientists who may lack a sound background in mathematical statistics. On the other hand, introductory level statistics books, which may appeal to a wider audience, place over-emphasis on the normal distribution (the Bell Curve) due to its popularity, but may not be suitable enough for modeling positively skewed data sets for obvious reasons. Hence we felt the need for a handbook which can explain and discuss the applications of some of the well known positively skewed probability distributions in a simple step by step manner.
