SSO requires NetBackup Enterprise Server, and is an extension of Media Manager, which enables individual tape drives to be dynamically shared between multiple NetBackup media servers or SAN media servers. Each media server can access any of the shared drives as needed, and each server “owns” the drives that it has active. The shared drives are automatically allocated and de-allocated as backup and restore operations dictate. This allows data to be backed up directly to tape drives in a SAN configuration instead of moving data over the local area network (LAN). It may not be obvious, but A SAN is not required for SSO. There are many benefits of using SSO. First of all, SSO enables media servers to share both robotic and stand-alone tape drives. In addition, when used in a Fibre Channel environment, SSO takes advantage of Fibre Channel’s high data transfer rates, longer connectivity distances, as opposed to SCSI, and dynamic reconfiguration capabilities. SSO can reduce overall storage costs for your organization. This is because with SSO, you can reserve one drive for all of your servers to share for restore jobs, rather than one drive per server in a traditional environment. And finally, SSO provides fault tolerance and drive resiliency in the event of drive failure.
