This book is designed for intermediate to advanced bioinformatics students who have taken a couple of introductory courses, along with the prerequisite biochemistry and computer science introductions. I have included problem sets with each chapter with the goal of spurring further study and inquiry. This book is also designed to be an aid to those researchers who want to get more from their data than may be seen with a standard BLAST search, and wish to obtain the greatest possible information in the least amount of time. Many useful resources in terms of databases and programs are woefully underutilized by the bioinformatics community, simply due to a lack of knowledge. Prudent use of these tools can be a tremendous benefit to most projects, whether the project is a metagenomics study or a search for function in a set of newly sequenced ESTs.
