3D printing
Terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry techniques have been widely used for the documentation of heritage sites. Relatively recently, micro-CT technologies have been investigated with the aim of capturing small details present in artifacts. Abel et al.summarized the possible role of X-ray micro-CT in the study, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge relating to various artifacts. They compare and contrast X-ray micro-CT with other ways of illustrating artifacts such as photography, serial sectioning, and laser surface scanning techniques. The authors also mention the possible role of linking the micro-CT imaging 3D data to 3D printing technology. In our article we report on thestudy of a single Cantonese ivory chess piece, (Figure 1). We have combined the use of X-Ray Micro-CT,specially written novel masking and editing software, and 3D printing.
