Configuring the Switch IP Address

Purpose: This slide describes the ip address global configuration command on the Catalyst 1900 switch.
Emphasize: Why does a Layer 2 switch require an IP address? It is used for switch management purposes, for example, to Telnet to the switch, or to use the Web-based Visual Switch Manager to manage the switch.
Note: On the Catalyst 1900 and 2900xl switches, the IP address is always in VLAN1. It cannot be moved to any other VLAN like the Catalyst 5000 SC0 port.
