NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks rallied on Wednesday as banking group JPMorgan Chase posted better-than-expected quarterly earnings on the back of an upbeat profit report from chip maker Intel.
Traders said stronger-than-expected earnings from beverages giant Coca-Cola also helped boost the markets.
The leading blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 256.80 points (2.08 percent) to close at 12,619.27.
The Nasdaq composite jumped 64.07 points (2.80 percent) to 2,350.11 and the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index surged 30.28 points (2.27 percent) to finish at 1,364.71.
Market participants said the rosy earnings reports boosted investors spirits and raised hopes that corporate America might be weathering an economic slowdown relatively well.
JPMorgan Chase raked in 2.4 billion dollars in profit during the first quarter, which was down from the same period a year earlier, but above what most analysts had predicted.
"The firm as a whole maintained solid business momentum and our capital position remained strong," JPMorgan Chase's chairman and chief executive Jamie Dimon said, referring in part to the broad credit crunch sweeping the financial industry.
The bank's shares rocketed 6.7 percent to 44.96 dollars.
JPMorgan is in the process of taking over the ailing Bear Stearns investment bank which had suffered from vast losses linked to mortgage-related securities.
Intel reported record revenues of 9.7 billion dollars and a net profit of 1.44 billion dollars after the markets had closed Tuesday, but investors continued toasting its earnings through much of Wednesday.
