大多数 笔记本电脑需要使用功能键来激活或解除笔记本的视频信号输出。由于大多数笔记本的激活或解除是以拨动开关的形式来切换：重复按切换键来显示笔记本上的画面 和投影仪上的画面，或者让两者同时都显示。但如果投影仪上的默认分辨率不能匹配笔记本上 LCD 显示的分辨率，同时显示画面将不能实现。某些笔记本还将需要关机再启动，来实现和投影仪的最佳匹配。
