I just want the idea of how the wordpress theme engine works, not how to create a wordpress theme, no. It's how do I create a theme engine like wordpress's for my web applications.

Wordpress is open-source so you can see exactly how it was written. The WordPress Codex is also very well written so you can dive right in.
